List all of these references in a section at the end of the proposal. Formulate a research timetable, using the department's deadlines for proposals. In your writing stages, include time for research, for writing your literature review, which aggregates previous research on the topic, and for presentations, training and seminars necessary for your research. Identify when you'll turn in each chapter.

Note each section's deadline next to it in your table. Note any special equipment, facilities or literature your research requires. Include where you're obtaining these resources, whether it's through the school or independently. Write a section on your research's estimated costs. Break down costs into categories like travel, equipment rental and material and supplies.

Include a per-unit and total cost for each category. Write down a grand total on the bottom of the chart. Identify your supervisor and the role she will play.

If you have more than one supervisor for your research, detail how each one will contribute and what role she will fulfill. Universities have different requirements, but you may have a coordinating supervisor who overlooks administration and reporting, a primary supervisor for your research and a secondary supervisor for a specialized area of your study.

Specify how many times you'll meet with a given supervisor and what she's responsible for. Demonstrate that you are competent to conduct the research and have chosen the best research or scholarly environment in which to achieve your goals. Get feedback and edit. Then edit some more. And get more feedback. The more diverse opinion and criticism you receive on your proposal the better suited it will be for a multi-disciplinary audience. Your research proposal is not a binding document; it is a proposal.

It is well understood by all concerned that the research you end up pursuing may be different from that in your proposal.

Instead of treating your proposal as a final, binding document, think of it as a flexible way to plan an exciting but feasible project that you would like to pursue. Break down your proposal into point form before writing your first draft. Describe your research proposal in non-technical terms. Use clear, plain language and avoid jargon. Depending on the level of detail that your specific course requires, you may also want to explain why your chosen approaches to gathering data are more appropriate to your research than others.

Your dissertation proposal should also include the aims and objectives of your research. Be sure to state what your research hopes to achieve, and what outcomes you predict.

You may also need to clearly state what your main research objectives are, in other words, how you plan to obtain those achievements and outcomes. The literature review will list the books and materials that you used to do your research. This is where you can list materials that give you more background on your topic, or contain research carried out previously that you refer to in your own studies.

Lastly, you will also need to include the constraints of your research. Many topics will have broad links to numerous larger and more complex issues, so by clearly stating the constraints of your research, you are displaying your understanding and acknowledgment of these larger issues, and the role they play by focusing your research on just one section or part of the subject. The structure of your dissertation proposal will depend on your specific course requirements.
